Type of element - Non-metal, Most chlorine is man made
Discovery - Carl Wilhelm Scheele, a Swedish chemist, made chlorine when he combined mineral pyrolusite with hydrochloric acid in 1774. He thought that he produced a gas with oxygen in it, but in 1810 Sir Humphry Davy proved oxygen was a distinct element.
Uses for Chlorine - An antiseptic (used to clean and make things pure), used to make drinking water safe and to treat swimming pools
Compounds that contain chlorine - Table salt, bleach and potassium perchlorate ( in many fireworks )
Location of chlorine in nature - Chlorine only exists with other elements in nature. An Ecuadorian tree frog produces a chlorinated alkaloid, with pain-killing properties several hundred times more powerful then morphine.
Location on the Periodic Table of Elements - Chlorine is in the Halogen family, it has 7 valance electrons. It is in the 3rd period on the Periodic Table.
Other Elements in the same family/group - Flourine, Bromine,Iodine,Astatine
Bohr model of Chlorine
Physical properties of Chlorine - Greenish yellow gas, it has a choking smell and inhalation causes suffocation, two and one half times as dense as air and is soluble in water.
Interesting facts - First gas used in chemical warfare, it is the second most common Halogen on earth and it is capable of joining with practically every element, creating a chloride.
